PROCEEDS GO TOWARD PURCHASING FIRE AND HEALTH PREVENTION EDUCATION MATERIALS FOR THE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Billy Brushwacker
Billy Brushwacker

Billy Brushwacker is Arizona's youth curriculum to educate children ages 8-11 about Firewise principles. Fire education programs have been instrumental in inspiring generations of children to prevent fire and to become more safety conscious. Making our homes safer from the threat of wildfire is an important new fire safety message that requires nothing less than a change in attitude and behavior.

The Billy Brushwacker program is designed to meet Arizona Department of Education Standards so it can be used by the teacher as part of the required curriculum for science. Also available from Arizona Firewise Communities are workbooks that the students can take home and involve their parents in Firewise concepts, and a video game which is a fun way to reinforce the material.

Fire Prevention -"Elementary, My Dear Billy!"
Kids from the Elgin school
This late winter season brought instructional time in the local elementary classrooms. The third grade classes at Elgin and Harvest Christian received a state certified curriculum on wildland fire season preparation. This program was created by the Pine Strawberry Fire Department in Arizona. The basic concept utilizes a cartoon-type goat who shares interventions which can be used in making home property more fire safe. Goats have been used as a tool in reducing fuels in forest areas and is promoted by the Arizona State Land Department in their "Firewise" program and continues to gain use nationwide. Concepts include creating a defensible space around the home, such as thinning tree limbs, cutting grass and weeds, clearing the area around propane tanks, and relocating wood piles to facilitate a wildland fire moving around a home rather than engulfing it. The students worked on their home project with their parents and identified ways their families could reduce fire risks around their homes.
